This is the first thing you need to know about creating little things with polymer clay: it’s easier than you think. Many wonderful artists share their tutorials on both blogs and YouTube videos online, and I’ve included a few at the bottom of this post.

I’m going to post some super simple projects for complete beginners so you can decide if this is something you want to get into.

If you have twins or older children in your life, you can encourage them to do charms (if they haven’t already).

The possibilities are truly endless: fairy garden accessories, mini cookies and cupcakes, favorite characters from video games or books – or your own, animals, insects, flowers, snacks, etc. They are perfect for necklaces, bracelets and pendants.

20 Polymer Clay Tips And Tricks For Beginners

You can make things as simple or realistic as you like. Very simple charms (like these fairy lily pond coasters) take 15 minutes or less to sculpt, meaning you can make quite a collection in an afternoon.

1 Choose a design. Use a photo or tutorial to guide you. 2 Cut, heat (with hands) and sculpt the clay. 3 Add any color accents you like. 4 Bake the clay according to package directions. Premo clay (¼” thick) takes 30 minutes at 270 °F/132 °C. 5 Allow to cool (when hardened). 6 Add color accents and/or sealant if needed.

Let me show you what’s in my polymer clay tool kit. Commercial tool kits are available (those designed for natural clay and not ideal for polymer work), but you may already have most of what you need at home.

You may not need everything listed here. This is just an overview of what might be useful.
