Polymer clay is an artistic medium known for its versatility, flexibility and ease of processing. It is a modeling clay for baking in the oven consisting of polymers, resins, pigments and fillers. It is not natural clay, it is made of plastic based on polyvinyl chloride (PVC).

Clay can be used to cover objects that won’t burn when fired, such as frames, pencils, and mirrors. To create your own color, polymer clay can be shaped like paint or colored with powder, chalk, ink, glitter, colored pencils, powder makeup and paint. After baking, polymer clay can be sanded, beaten, varnished or painted. You’re only limited by your imagination, and yet there are plenty of projects and ideas for others to choose from!
Polymer clay has been around in some form since the late 1930s. The idea was born in Germany, where doll maker Fifi Rehbinder had trouble finding her usual items due to the political unrest of the time. The tough woman made plastic clay called “Fifi Mosaik” which she used to sculpt the doll’s head. By 1964, Rehbinder had sold the formula to Eberhard Faber. The manufacturer adapted this formula to the Fimo brand of polymer clay and sold it to toy stores in Europe, where it was primarily seen as a medium for children’s toys or miniature sculptures used in dollhouses and dollhouses.
Polymer clay first appeared in the United States in the 1970s. The Schaup family, immigrants from Germany, received Fimo as a Christmas present from their grandmother, who lived abroad. The Shoups’ clay creations soon caught the attention of friends and neighbors, and in 1975 the family began importing Fimo to the United States. American companies soon followed suit.

Meanwhile, others in the United States were experimenting with polymer clay. In the 1950s, clay illustrator Gordon Swenarton used vinyl paste obtained from his father through chemistry. In the 1960s, the Zenith Products Company in the United States “accidentally” created its own polymer clay. The compound was developed by Polyform in hopes of using it as a heat transfer compound. Although it did not function in its intended industrial capacity, the interest of the young visitor indicated that the product had great potential as an arts and crafts medium. (The owner’s daughter is carving an elephant out of clay. Although white Polyform/Sculpey was sold as early as 1967, it did not reach its current glossy color until 1984. Until then, artists had to add their own pigments to color the clay.

Sculpey is a great medium for sculpting, especially for smaller sculptures that require a lot of detail and/or need rope to support an arch or create movement in the piece. Here I go through the steps I use for the final details of the sculpture and the tools I use.
Sculpting A Polymer Clay Frog In A Pond
The sculpture is made of polymer material Super Sculpt, which can be hardened in an oven at a temperature of 275 degrees Celsius. There are several varieties of Sculpey – the “regular” variety, the (white) blue “super” “sculpey” which is a little harder to feel and can get more detail. There is also a gray “solid” Sculpey.
The statue has an aluminum wire armature and most of the horse’s body is made of aluminum alloy. This reduces the weight of the piece and makes Sculpey thinner and cures more evenly in less time. Be sure to wrap the aluminum foil tightly to avoid air bubbles.

When setting up a sculpture, it is important to plan ahead so that you can build a solid foundation for your creation. Here I sketched out my idea and assembled the armature using the sketch. The horse mounts to its frame from the back so it is only carved on one side and the armature construction is basically flat and attached directly to the frame / wooden shadow box. . I used a small piece of wood (1/2″ dowel) as the main support for most of the sculpture that would hide under the horse’s chest. Then I attached aluminum armature wire (1/8″ diameter (and lined). ) and reinforced the base shape with wire at several points Since the horse’s neck is quite large, the neck wire is twisted together to add strength.

When creating a rope, it is important to observe the correct proportions. Using the thread head as the unit of measurement, measure repeatedly with the calipers (shown in the upper right of the image) to ensure that you are assembling the fitting with the correct proportions. There are many resources on the Internet and in art books that determine this ratio. The standard 7 1/2 head system works well for the human form. I will admit that my horse’s body length is a little short, but overall I tried to make it work. For me, this rope is unique – usually my ropes for human figures are much simpler, without wood and accessories, just aluminum wire.
Be careful when using wood in your super sculptures – I used a fairly small piece here as a large piece would be at risk of being unpredictable at the temperatures needed to harden the clay. If you decide to use a larger piece of wood, you can check that the wood does not expand or split. If you’re new, there’s even a wooden spoon! Smoke oven parties are no fun!
I used 6/32 machine tubing (threaded through the wood block and back wall wires) with nuts and washers on the back of the frame to attach the picture to the shadow box frame.
Once you have a solid frame structure, use aluminum foil to bulk up your sculptures and start roughing out the figure. It’s a great material because it’s cheap, light, and doesn’t change with the heat of the oven. I use plain old aluminum foil from the grocery store, tear off the leaves, fold them several times into strips about 1.5 x 2 inches and tie with twine. I pack the lid as tightly as possible so that it does not move or fall when I start pouring the clay. If it doesn’t stop, you can pry the cover off with a hammer or other hard tool. I take thin wraps and wrap them tightly around the limb armature wires, or if the limbs are too thin you can wrap thin wire around the base wire (I use 24 flower wire). This will help the clay hold the wire.
