Contact us to schedule a discovery call and let’s start creating a summer window display! For brick and mortar retailers, creating beautiful store window displays comes to them. For some, creating a window display can be difficult and challenging! If you’re late, I want to share some great ideas for creating eye-catching storefronts.
I co-own a boutique with my sister in Lakewood, Ohio. We are a home decor and gift shop with a design studio where we restore furniture and create custom projects to sell in our store.
At one point in our retail business journey, we offered creative workshops in our studio and wanted to highlight this on a window display.
Over the years, as a retail business coach and brick-and-mortar store owner, I’ve learned that a good window display is eye-catching. Everything in the window should be visible and the message/theme should be clear to attract customers on foot and in cars. So think big, bold and fancy.
5 Things Retail Stores With Outside Window Displays Can Do So Well
The window design includes some design. At that time we knew that highlighting our workshops would match the bright and springy look we had in the window. So, we sat down with a good old pen and paper and prepared the window design.
In retail, it’s always good to be clear about what you’re selling – branding is one way to do that. We used cardstock and a glue gun to make paper fans. We printed the letters on white paper, cut them out and glued them to paper fans to make a simple, beautiful and easy to read “REQUESTS” sign without hitting the window. I drilled a hole in the top and used a twin and regular gun to hang the letters.
If hanging a sign isn’t an option, another great way to display a sign in a DIY window is by using a gradient. We used an easel to produce a canvas sign with vinyl letters to promote our handwriting classes.
We used cardstock to make our paper flowers. Most window displays don’t have a background or place to hang things, so you have to get creative. We attached large paper flowers to tall window blinds we had in our basement – a free display that can be used year-round. Get creative and save money by using things you already have in stock.
Want To Stand Out At A Craft Show? Try These Display Tricks
To highlight the furniture painting tutorials, we chose to show the “before and after” results using an old table in our house. To emphasize the furniture we sell in our store, we collect a few unfinished boxes and use the space in each box for a small object.
Use the depth and height of the window to your advantage. It gives you the display size of your window. We put other things in the back, center and front, like our hand-stitched yarn, hemp beads and wooden beads. Then we use a simple hook to hang it above the window. We had a variety of heights, from a display of tall paper flowers to a half-painted cabinet door sitting on the floor.
We also love luxury strollers! They are great for displaying and organizing things. Use them for business purposes in your office space, storage rooms or shop. We used our white cart to show off the beautiful yarn that was used to make the wall.
Indoors, these gold 12-inch hoop wreaths will make a great display. But for our main window, we knew we needed an extreme version. So we ordered 24 inch wooden frames and fabric sheets.
Happy New Year! A Look Back And Ahead
Maureen generously made these wreaths by painting them with gold and creating a large variety of her own flowers for the display. It’s good, isn’t it?
As brick and mortar store owners, we have a lot of balls. Creating eye-catching window displays like these can take a lot of time, so be sure to ask for help. Ask family members, friends, co-workers, business partners, subcontractors, or anyone else who might be willing to help. You might be surprised to see who is willing to help you!
