How To Decorate Shelving

I describe the style of this room as empty when I meet the winter whites… “Clean” is the word I hear most often when people look at my Instagram page and I’m not crazy about it. I gravitate towards bright, open and airy spaces and love neutral palettes with lots of white and contrasting black and natural materials like rattan, seaweed and light wood tones for warmth and texture.

What’s all the hype about this room? Is there a piece or element that inspires the overall design?

The inspiration for this room was a beautiful giclee art print of Big Sur by artist Deb Presuto. I’m always looking for a landscape that’s soft, muted, and pulls off the rug’s colors, so when I saw this one on Debin’s website, I knew it had to be mine. I layered a small black and white geometric piece for contrast and I’m happy with how they look together on the mantle. I also installed the Luca Iron Chandelier from Pottery Barn and I really like how it has a clean, curved silhouette. Struggling with how to decorate an empty closet in your home? Decorating closets can seem overwhelming and you may not know where to start! That’s how I felt when I first tried to decorate our closets. I was often in tears trying to figure out how to style the wardrobe forever to find the perfect balance and look I was looking for.

Over the years, I’ve perfected the method I use whenever I design wardrobes, and I promise the next time you style it, the end result will be perfectly styled wardrobes every time!

My approach to decorating closets is all about the placement of the things I use. I’m going to style our closets in three different ways using items from around our home, but I’m using the same placement method to show you how easy it is to apply it to your own homes.

Always start from your top shelf and work your way down. You’re going to cover most of the closet from one end of the closet to the other, starting with the top closet.

Designer quality wardrobes are an important part of home decor in different heights. For example, look at the photo below. I made sure to use height trim on the top shelf, not just layer trim from one end to the other.

Some ideas for tall objects are plants like snake plants that can grow very tall, large pictures placed vertically or horizontally, large decorative objects or candles.

Make sure to include enough items in your closet so that it doesn’t look cluttered. Your ultimate goal is to refine a bookshelf or closet and make it thoughtful, not fill it with all the pretty things you own.

Once you’ve designed your top shelf, it’s time for the bottom shelf. On this shelf we are now going to divide our decor into two sections instead of spreading it across the length of the shelf.

As you can see in the photo above, if you want a minimalist look, this does not mean that you can only use one item on either side of the shelf.

You can layer many decorative items nicely, but the most important part is to leave some empty space or white space between the two groups.

The goal is to make our wardrobes stylish and not look like throwaways. We want it to look intentional, and the two groups below give our eye somewhere to rest and look more attractive.

Decorating Your Home With Floating Shelves

Repeat. This method works no matter how many floating shelves or bookcases you have. Do the next shelf and the next shelf in two groups until you have decorated all of your shelves with decorations across the width of the shelf.

When I’m done, I like to take a photo of the back to help me see if I need to add anything or remove anything.

Taking photos or looking at a camera helps you notice what you don’t have.

I shared a minimal look by using very little decoration and using the same method of layering decorations in groups on each shelf.

If your style is more farmhouse, you’ll use more farmhouse decor and less boho or mid-century pieces.

If your style is more modern, you will use less embellishment and mostly large-scale items and very small items.
