We’re in the modern computer age, but even today, most shoe designers start with a pen and pencil. I’ve found that a small stack of 8.5″ x 11″ paper is a good place to start. A piece of thin paper so you can see the mat and a small metal clip to hold the sheets together while you draw. Whichever pen you like, I like to use both wood and mechanical depending on what I’m doing. I often start with a mechanical pencil to draw lighter lines, and when I’m more confident with the design, I darken the shoe design with a wooden pencil.
You may also want a set of French curves to create a circle or oval template for smooth smooth lines and other details like eyes or logos. You can create a company logo template to speed up the sketching process.
