Simple Balloon Decoration Ideas For Birthday Party At Home – I have officially given up on being a Pinterest-worthy birthday mom. Don’t get me wrong, I definitely went out with my first two kids. I created elaborate themes and DIY projects that took weeks to put together. As time went on baby #3 and then #4 came along, however, I suddenly felt the reality of birthday burnout. Because of this, the DIY balloon garland tradition was born. Today I will share with you how to make a flower garland.

Simplicity became my new niche and I decided to focus my efforts on the simple things my kids really love: presents, cakes and balloons!

This simple balloon garland tradition started when my little one turned 1. I came up with a random way to make this decoration in less than an hour. Because let’s be honest, I have four children whose birthdays are within three months of each other. There must have been a time or two where the day ends and birthday planning suddenly becomes more than birthday bashing.

Making a balloon garland starts with air! Plug in the pump and blow up all the balloons. (A pump is not required but it will save you a lot of time and only cost around $20. It’s worth the time and oxygen savings.

The next step in this balloon garland tutorial is to grab the plastic strip and add the first balloon. (I’ll usually start at the fourth or fifth hole, so there’s an extra strip to hide after finishing.) Pull the knot through the larger hole and slide it over the smaller hole to secure it.

Add another balloon to the opposite side of the strip. This will avoid crowding and allow you to add one to each hole.

Continue adding balloons until you reach your desired length. Be sure to mix sizes and colors at random.

The last step in making a balloon garland is to hang it. I love hanging from the ceiling above our kitchen island. I would cut a plastic strip with about 4-5 open holes at the end and use some tack to secure it to the ceiling.

The only other thing I usually include is a happy birthday banner and a large mylar balloon chosen specifically for the birthday child. I usually run to the party store to grab it.

It usually takes an hour to make an eight-foot balloon garland. The biggest time/energy saver is using a balloon pump to inflate the balloons. I would never make a balloon garland without a pump!

DIY balloon garland kits cost about $15-$25 plus the initial cost of the balloon pump, which is about $25. There are a variety of color schemes and themes to choose from, and they often come with additional decorations for the balloon garden. You can then choose to make it as simple or complex as you choose.

Yes! But one of my top balloon garland tips is to use a balloon pump to inflate the balloons! I have had the best luck making balloon garlands one to three days in advance, as long as I use a balloon pump to inflate the balloons. My theory is that the pump only injects dry air into the balloon (instead of wet air from human breathing) keeping the integrity of the balloon intact.

Most balloons will keep for several days but sometimes there are some balloons that dry out faster than others. The earlier you make the garland, the more likely you will need to replace some of the balloons on the day of the party.

I’ve had balloon garlands on our kitchen island for weeks! Not because I needed to but just because I didn’t get up on the island to bring them down. After a few days there will be balloons that start to pop, but you’ll be surprised how long it lasts! We have two boys with birthdays in the same week and I’ve definitely worn the same guard several times for “birthday week”!

Again, one of my best balloon garland tips is using a pump to make the balloons taller!

Use small balloons to fill the gaps in the DIY balloon garland. Stick them into the empty hole of a plastic balloon garland strip, or kits often come with double-sided glue dots that you can stick to one balloon and attach to the other.
