Small Apartment Bedroom Design Ideas – This is Sarah reporting live from NYC? Sofia just left after a 4 day trip to see my new place. And of course to help me decorate!
Since I lived at home for a year after graduating college, this is my first real apartment, and I’m so excited to finally be able to live on my own in a city I’ve always dreamed of living in. .

I like to think I have an eye for things that look good, but I don’t know how to put it all together. So I need Sophia’s help. He put everything together and I was amazed!!

Here are all the details of my NYC bedroom decor and how we decorated our new apartment room!
For NYC apartments, my room is a great place. I have enough space for a desk and wardrobe which is a bit much for what I paid. And look at that light!! The floor to ceiling windows are one of my favorite features.
Sofia and I have different styles but we always seem to appreciate others haha. We decided that my style is minimal fashion. I like things very simple, light and bright with some pops of color and funk.
Before Sofia arrived, I bought all the basics and set up – bed, table, wardrobe, lights and mirrors. It was pretty bare.

We created a “design plan” aka a shared Pinterest board where I pinned a lot of inspo images of the vibe we were going for our room.
From there, Sophia found decorative items she thought I would like and we ordered them to arrive when I was in town.
We checked out everything we could find and then did a little shopping to pick out the rest of the decor.
I spent the whole day looking for great furniture. Furniture is very expensive so I scour the internet for things that are cute and won’t break the bank.

Dressers and mirrors are surprisingly good prices from Walmart. I really like them both!
I will say one thing about the dresser…it’s so cute now that it’s put together but omg it was a b*tch to set up. My parents and I almost threw it away because it was so difficult. We hired a task rabbit to accomplish this (whoever invented the task rabbit is an angel from above). So unless you’re really good at making things, I’d be willing to pay someone or take the time to make them.
The chair was sold out everywhere so I found it on FB Marketplace for $25! The table top is the perfect size for my room – they have different sizes and you can choose different bottoms for it. I took adjustable legs with me!
I enjoy my bed. I wanted to keep it simple and relaxed and I think I achieved that?

About the mattress – I was going to get Sophia’s mattress that she was dying for but I tried it and for me, it was almost too comfortable. I realized that I don’t sleep well on a tempurpedic bed, so I got this mattress. It is a hybrid so it has springs and a gel top. I added this mattress topper and wow… *chef’s kiss* and Sophia approves!
For bedding – I have found Melanie sheets that people love and the hype is worth it. So delicious and so cheap!
My duvet cover is a bit of a splurge for me and I’m definitely ~impressed~ but it’s Brooklynn and it’s so cute. You also have two free pillows and a tote bag that I use everyday for good haha.
We didn’t do much for this area of the room because it was so tight but I did get this hanging lamp from Target (amazing dupe for West Elm!).

Finally, the throw pillows are from Zara Home. They match the tone of the blanket and make the beds more consistent.
The space next to my bed is very small but I really need some kind of table to store water, my phone and my book at night. I found this cute little nightstand from West Elm and thought it was perfect.
After adding them, we realized that it is a lot of white. So we went to H&M Home and found a black candlestick to add contrast to the space. Love how simple it is!
Instead of a closet, I have storage on my wall with shelves, a rod, and some tall storage space. I have a fair amount of storage so we thought it would be nice to decorate some extra shelves.
14 Small Bedroom Ideas To Make Your Space Feel Bigger Than It Really Is
I am a big reader so of course I have to bring a lot of books to keep me occupied. We styled the books with this cool marble bookend and this black marble sphere above.
We kept the second shelf simple with this marble picture frame (feeling a pattern here haha) and this face candle from H&M Home.
Since many things in my room are white, we needed to add some color. I found these two prints on Etsy and had them printed at Staples. We put them in white frames from Target and leaned them against each other on our dresser and then added some books to the coffee table in front.
I love this candle holder from H&M Home along with these CB2 candles (which are only $5!) This place is one of my favorites in the room!

Finally, for decoration, we added this hanging picture frame above my desk. We found this wooden frame at H&M for a super bargain!
We struggled for a while on what to put on it but had the great idea to put a photo of NYC taken a few months ago! I think it’s perfect.
We replaced our dresser knobs with gold to make them look sweeter. And that’s for decoration!
We also added these store containers to the containers on my “craft” shelves. It was a great way to make things more consistent and organized.
