A few weeks ago, my brother asked me if I would help him design his living room in the apartment he moved into. I’m glad you asked me to help. Of course I said yes, but then asked if I could take it on as one of my projects. He didn’t hesitate to say yes and I started planning right away. I’m excited to show you how you can take a small rental space and make it feel like home, and most importantly, your style.

Here’s what I’ve been working on. This is a total of 110 square feet for the living room area. It’s honestly a big blank canvas. The walls were painted light gray so considering my design scheme.

I put everything in my truck, minus the sofa, to go to his apartment for a one-day living room makeover. I have to say I was very impressed that everything fit in the truck. And at the end of the day I opened the living room to my brother.
The transformation gave the space a new vibe, look and feel. It shows that even a small rental space can feel like home and reflect your personal style. Yes, even when you can’t paint the walls! The best part was seeing how shocked my brother was and the joy on his face when he saw everything come together.
A few things have been incorporated and designed to make the best use of the 110 square feet for this space and give it the ultimate cozy feel.
6 Brilliant Ways To Make Space For A Dining Table In The Teensiest Of Living Rooms
By hanging the curtains near the ceiling, the walls are raised and the apartment feels bigger. Something nice for an area of 110 square feet. You also don’t want to block any natural light coming in from the window. To maximize sunlight, hang curtain panels above the window edge. It also looks like you have a bigger window.
For the couches and the coffee table, I chose nesting boxes for both. They can be compact for such a small space, but still provide an extra surface when needed. It is also good that the table can be moved to other parts of the apartment if necessary.
I went with a round table so it flowed easily from side to side in the main living area of the apartment when I walked through the front door. This allowed a more organic flow as opposed to a rectangular table that would have stagnated the flow of the room.
Having already worked with a small space, I knew my brother would need extra storage and a place to put his keys when he walked through the front door. I found this entertainment cabinet on Amazon for an amazing price and painted it black to go with the overall design of the space.

Not only does it offer plenty of storage inside and above the closet, but it’s the perfect size for this small space. Knowing that the kitchen island/counter space will go up in this area, I didn’t make anything too big. By going with these smaller cabinets, the spaces do not overlap and function as their own spaces. For example, I didn’t want the stool to slide out in front of the closet every time someone sat down.
Remember my brother wanted a cow print rug? Instead of making a single one in the space, I decided to put it on an 8 x 10 rug. By doing so, it helps define the space, adds a cozy element, and adds texture to the overall design of the living room. I honestly think cowhide rugs make a room and I can’t imagine it without it. And a little detail on the 8 x 10 rug, it’s jute
Cotton rug. This is what creates a beautiful pattern on it, making it a soft jute rug that is not so stiff.
One of the main things you need to keep in mind while designing the space is the size of the furniture and the size of the room in which it goes. With this small living room space, my design includes a sofa bed and two side chairs. I was anxious to see how it would fit and flow, but everything fit perfectly.

Since the sofa is the largest piece of furniture, I knew that the chairs needed to be small and not bulky. These two black leather side chairs help ground the space, and the lack of upholstery also allows your eyes to wander around the room. In other words, under and to the side of the arm, is free space.
Giving a space a certain personal style makes it truly your own. As for my brother, he is studying to become a sommelier (a trained wine professional) and has found ways to incorporate this into the overall design.
For example, the artwork in the frames on the wall is of wine barrels. They are really stunning and add to the masculine aspect of the space. The book on the coffee table is one of Philip’s books on wine, so I’ve included that as well. You will also find decanters and whiskey glasses on the entertainment cabinet. And finally, the cow rug was the first thing he said he wanted to incorporate into the space.
This has become one of my favorite projects to date! Doing this for my brother and seeing him fall in love with his new apartment space makes my heart so happy. He was so excited, he had friends over the same night I revealed it. God, it will make you laugh!
