In the form of a simple rod to hold your wardrobe, this popular feature also adds a metallic sheen to a neutral bedroom!

Here you don’t need an extra closet or a small space in the corner to make a storage cabinet. A simple plain wall will do the trick, and if you’re feeling even bolder, use wallpaper to highlight the wardrobe.

From the simple open closet design for small bedrooms, we move on to the small space that the closet can accommodate. There are more options here, and the combination of open shelves at the top with closed drawers at the bottom is a great solution. Instead of using doors, you can turn to curtains to save space and reduce costs, and you can also add a traditional dresser that stands next to you to further enhance the design of the closet. I would say the minimum size for a wardrobe is a 4 foot wide square. You need enough space to hang a clothes rod that is about 2 feet long and be able to stand there.

In my place, I was lucky to have a room that was 4 feet wide but very high. This allowed for some pretty creative recording.

When we moved into our current home, there really wasn’t enough closet space in the bedroom. We came from a larger house where we renovated the fifth bedroom into a large walk-in closet. By tweaking a wall here and there, we added new closet space to the master bedroom.

Small Master Bedroom Closet Makeover

So, how can we live with a small closet? Truth be told, I was all for living with less, but I still needed a real closet.

The room that will be my husband’s office blocked our master bathroom, which we planned to renovate anyway. With a little fiddling, I was able to steal a 4′ x 12′ space from her great room to create a functional but small walk-in closet. Space that would have been wasted in his study became usable space for my closet.

When you enter our master bedroom, you enter a sort of “dressing lobby” as I call it. There are 3 closets. Well, actually two of the long reach cabinets have two separate pairs of doors. But the space passes from the inside and was equipped with a well-constructed organizational system. Double-hung, collapsible wardrobes and shoe cabinets abounded. The long hanging belt and tie holes told me it would benefit the most from a man’s clothes.

Another small reach in the closet was enough space for my hanging clothes. It was a good place to store things like my frequently used carry-on and the top shelf held a few magazines and other items.

I then focused on wardrobe design and what would fit in a very narrow but tall space. I was able to build a small wardrobe that accommodated my everyday wardrobe. We were lucky to have a separate wardrobe upstairs, so all the clothes that were bulky and seasonal could be moved there. We also had plenty of drawers for small things so that wasn’t a problem.

I like to be organized and this closet design had to be super organized since I was dealing with limited space. It’s small but mighty and it always amazes me how much storage it actually offers. I only had 12 inches of floor space taken up by the built-in shelves, which left 31 inches for the aisle. Everything else fits in the large chest of drawers in the first bedroom.

The long and narrow room came with a window on the left. I used the back wall of the cabinet for double hanging. The rest of the right side became a full-length shelter where I hang my everyday clothes. The shelf holds all jeans, t-shirts, trousers, sweaters, shorts and sweatshirts. Space for long legs at the beginning and end of the cabinets is left open so as not to encroach on the entrance or hanging space.

I also decided not to add doors so the room felt decorated and not just a place to hang clothes. I bought a curtain to use when needed but haven’t put it up yet and not sure if I will.

The key to designing a small wardrobe is to make the most of the available space and create a sense of order. By removing and organizing items, providing the right storage solution for existing items and adding some decorative details, you can turn a small wardrobe into a beautiful and functional space.

With a small walk-in closet, you need to use the area, so looking at the top shelf and the top half can make a big difference in organization. People often forget about all the space above your head in a room. If you have a very high ceiling height, you can use this space as needed.

I used the space above the front door for hooks to hold hats. This is a great place for extra shelves to hold small accessories like scarves and evening purses, shoe shine kits, etc. Just consider the storage space you use on your walls and
