When my friend contacted me about designing her apartment and I saw the kitchen, I knew it would be a great opportunity to change her mind! These small kitchens can make big statements! When I first looked at this kitchen, the size didn’t really bother me because look at all those cabinets! There is a lot of storage for such a small space!

The first thing on the to-do list was painting the cabinets. This makes the space brighter and more open.

When designing a space on a budget, my first approach is to see what we can keep. Keeping the layout the same and not having to move plumbing can save you thousands of dollars.

The goal of this small American kitchen was to keep the same layout and improve what was already there. Paint the walls and cabinets, add new hardware to the cabinets, a new ceiling light, new tables and a new backsplash.

New flooring had already been added and we were going to keep the same stove that was removed for cleaning and the same hood.

There was an open space on the bottom right near the sink that had no cabinets. So we measured the space and bought a new base unit with drawers. It fits perfectly and although it looks a little different, it fits perfectly after painting!

Since the space is so small, deciding on the paint colors to paint the cabinets was very important. I know I wanted the cabinets and upper walls to be white. This will make the space more open and not just like a room full of cabinets.

To add interest and color, it is better to create two-tone cabinets. At first, it seemed very attractive to create dark lower cabinets, but I wanted the whole space to be light and airy. So we went with Benjamin Moore October Mist for the lower cabinets and Benjamin Moore Simply White for the upper cabinets.

We were able to save the original hood and stove and honestly they look great in the space. Given the darkness of the cabinets and the general lighting of the room, we assumed the hood to be off-white. I even wiped it off and it still looked white. That was until everything was painted and we took it back to the kitchen to find it was a lovely bright white! The lighting has made it look beige!

Just off the kitchenette is a retro fridge that fits the space perfectly and a nice little breakfast nook just before heading into the dining room.

In the base cabinet that was added to fill the previous empty space, we installed a pull-out trash can and a drawer for containers inside the drawer.

To dry the dishes in the sink, we purchased a roll-up dish drying rack and items that we were able to store in the extra cabinets that were already in this kitchen.
