Small Living Room With Fireplace Decorating Ideas – As you all know, decorating my living room has always been a challenge. This awkward living room setup left me frustrated between the wall of sliding glass doors to the patio, the French doors, and the fireplace. While this arrangement works best for us, I don’t like having the couch in front of the sliding glass door in the summer. We entertain guests outside and as guests come in and out they often run their hands over the back of the white sofa or take off their sandals to prop themselves up on the sofa. To protect it, I laid a piece of cloth over the back of the sofa.
Is this seasonal traffic worth moving the couch and changing the position of my TV? Probably not. You have to arrange for a salon to work for you and compromise if necessary. Make it work for your every day, not for every occasion.
This living room arrangement option places the sofa in front of the fireplace and adds two accent chairs on the opposite wall facing the TV.
This furniture arrangement is a great way to keep a room formal yet comfortable. The sofa is in front of the fireplace with a side table and the TV is still on the opposite wall. Two accent chairs float near the sliding glass doors, keeping traffic flowing smoothly. This is a great option if you have an open concept home.

However, my awkward living room setup doesn’t allow for French doors and a bar with floating shelves. Since the walkway on either side of the couch is a high traffic area, I would need to push the couch closer to the fireplace, which might interrupt my conversation. This furniture arrangement might work for you, but unfortunately, it wasn’t possible for me.

A more formal living room setup – two sofas facing each other, but the focal point is still the fireplace.
The idea of two sofas facing each other in the living room has always intrigued me. It works well in a large room or open floor plan. It doesn’t work in my living room, but hear me out about what it’s like to live in a small space. Maybe instead of a couch, you have two loveseats facing each other. Can you squeeze in an accent chair or two for extra seating? How about two footrests instead?

If your living room is smaller and your upper living room layout feels like it doesn’t have enough floor space, the best way to fix it is to edit it. Remove an accent chair.
