Small Open Kitchen Living Room Design – Are you ready to turn your home’s open concept kitchen and living room into a stylish space that is both functional and stylish? Whether you’re hosting family gatherings or just curling up with a good book, this style guide will help you transform your space into a designer-looking haven. From creating a cohesive color scheme to optimizing routes, let’s jump right in!

Keeping an open concept and inviting kitchen space can be challenging. We have a place like our Little Lake House for rent. While open floor plan homes can make wonderful entertaining spaces, they can also be difficult to style in a practical and comfortable way. Here are some strategies I used when decorating the open concept living room and kitchen in our little lake house, and I hope they help you decorate your space too!

One of the keys to styling an open concept space is to ensure visual harmony. Start by choosing a base color that flows seamlessly between the kitchen and living room. Neutral colors such as soft grey, warm beige or calm white work wonders to create a peaceful backdrop. Then add pops of color through accessories like pillows, rugs or wall art to add personality and heart to the room. Remember, balance is key – aim for a belly that complements rather than competes.

How To Style An Open Concept Kitchen & Living Room

In our Little Lake House, I chose to paint the walls a soft white with gray undertones (silky white outside), and bring deep blues and warm yellows into the room through the closets, throw pillows, blankets, and furniture. You can see my very last beach mood board with the source link here. I recommend searching Pinterest for interior design and color scheme inspiration!

With an open concept layout, it is important to consider traffic flow to maintain efficiency while maximizing space. Avoid the streets with large furniture or decorative pieces that hinder movement. Choose standard furniture arrangements that encourage easy navigation between the kitchen and living room. In addition, strategically placed rugs can help define zones and direct the eye from one area to another.

In our little lake house, I like to make sure there is a generous path in the middle of the house that leads to the back patio doors overlooking the lake. I also used an area rug to anchor the large sofa sectional in the living room, making sure there was enough width for proper paths around the sectional and dining table. Generally, at least 36 inches is a good width for a comfortable walk.

Texture is the secret ingredient that can take your open concept space from soft to breathable. I find that this element is often missing when people think their space doesn’t have a “designer” feel. Add a variety of textures like plush throws, comfortable knits, smooth metallic finishes, and natural elements like wood or woven accents. Mix and match textures to create visual interest and depth, making the space feel inviting and vibrant. Consider texture-rich elements such as a statement wall decorated with textured wallpaper or a gallery of framed artwork to add additional intrigue. I recommend repeating textures in your open kitchen and living room to tie them together.

Get creative with how you add these textures! I like sisal or wicker for a rough texture, wood for smooth, metallic accents for shiny, throw pillows for fur and throw blankets for soft texture.

The table in our open kitchen serves as a kitchen island as well as a dining area

In an open concept kitchen and living room with multiple spaces, versatility is key when it comes to furniture selection. Look for pieces that serve dual purposes, such as a coffee table with built-in storage or a sofa that doubles as a sleeper for overnight guests. This not only increases the space, but also increases the practicality of your design. In addition, modular furniture allows flexibility, allowing you to adjust your layout according to different occasions or activities.

Lighting plays an important role in setting the mood and atmosphere of your open concept space. Add a layered lighting scheme that combines ambient, task and accent lighting to effectively illuminate different areas. Install dimmer switches to adjust the intensity of the ceiling lighting for cozy evenings or lively gatherings. Enhance the ambiance with table lamps, floor lamps, or pendant lights strategically placed to highlight focal points and create visual interest.

Kitchen Design Open-plan Or Broken-plan?

In our cabin, we installed spotlights in the ceiling, but also small lights for ambiance. I used floor lamps, wall lamps and pendant lights in the room for different lighting options.

Infuse your personality into the room with personal touches that reflect your style and interests. Display memorabilia, family photos, or pieces of art that evoke fond memories and spark conversation. Integrate indoor plants and greenery to bring life and freshness to your home, while purifying the air and boosting general well-being. From easy care succulents to statement fiddle leaf figs, plants add a vibrant touch of nature to your open concept oasis.

Again, repeat these elements in your living areas to bring everything together. In our little lake house, I used neutral colored dried flower arrangements in both the living room and kitchen to give the space a cohesive look.

With these tips and tricks up your sleeve, you should be well on your way to styling a stunning open concept kitchen and living room that looks cozy and comfortable. Remember, the key is to strike a balance between functionality and aesthetics while infusing your unique style into your space. Happy decorating!
