Small Space Small Kitchen Living Room Combo – As someone who has never had a large kitchen in the apartments I have lived in, I really like and appreciate the clever ideas that come out of designing a small space (especially, the kitchen). I personally have to get a little creative with this type of room so if you have a small kitchen that you want to upgrade, I’ve definitely been in your shoes. In fact, I am in your shoes right now! I look at my beautiful kitchen every day and ask, “How can I make it better?! Talk to me!” So my hope today is to inspire some great ideas that you can use whether you’re a recruiter or a developer. Maybe I can get some good tips too 🙂

Ok, ok I know you saw this kitchen last week but since it was the inspiration for this post I thought it should be first. I think the best idea to start with is a timeless design idea. While it was shot and prepared for Em’s new book, this kitchen was designed at least seven years ago. Can you tell?? Yes too. Traditional materials (white oak and white marble), a neutral but colorful palette, clean lines, and simple appliances are all ingredients for a kitchen design that will be amazing for many years.

Another thing that Ryan showed in the post is how to make the island and kitchen counters out of the same marble. It is not only simple and beautiful but it helps to make the corner area more harmonious. Your eyes can also rest. This is a good thing because they go with open shelves. As you’ll see in a second, I’m a HUGE fan of open closets when it makes sense. I think that small kitchens are the best place for them. Why? Well, if you live alone or with one person you probably don’t need a ton of groceries, glassware, etc. This makes it easy to store and keep everything looking organized. It also opens up the top half of your kitchen, making it look bigger and brighter. And finally, it is an easy way to make your living room look good and give it a personal style. You can easily add color with plates or glasses, style some beautiful vases and bowls, the sky is the limit. It’s a fun playground 🙂

Oh, and of course I have to mention the electricity that this island is like. As shown above, it can be an island but it can also be a table. And if necessary, it can be moved to the middle of the studio and become a dining table for four (maybe even six :))

And here is my oasis from the past. While I don’t miss the lack of closed storage (the paper sheet facing the oven – less than easy access) and the UGLY floor, I miss everything. This kitchen is a true labor of DIY love that probably made my father consider rejecting me because of my “specific and detailed” requirements.

So what did I do in my small kitchen? Fun fact: this isn’t the smallest kitchen I’ve ever lived in – Hey, San Francisco! So here is the list:

If you’re wondering if I removed the cabinet doors from the top, I didn’t. They already are. Although I think at some point they had doors. I like to organize and display all the things I want to look at and use. Having doors would be a missed design opportunity in my opinion. Sooo if you can maintain enough coverage consider removing (or all) of your upper cabinet doors and painting everything the same for a more cohesive look (unless everything is already the same color). I am actually considering this in my new kitchen.

So on the left is my other love – my old diner. Look, I could have put together a nice bistro table and two dining chairs and called it a day. But a) I like to confuse things for myself but more than that b) I like to use as much square footage as possible – something everyone should try to do if they can when designing a small space. Beat. One inch. Field. Plus I can say from experience this makes the place even bigger. For a while I set up a bistro there and made it small.

All the woodwork is done with ladders! This means that the front of each piece is already rounded. Now, I’m lucky that my dad has friends with good tools who can go around the corners and sides with ease. But if you want to make a bench or party between two walls, then you don’t have to worry about that! I then made the blue velvet backing with my cousin (no sewing machine needed) and the brass rods were cut from Restoration Hardware curtain rods from their store that my dad’s daughter got. I went into all the details in the first post but I want to show you that even if you are renting there is GOOD you can do. Don’t let “I’m just renting” stop you from creating the home you really want.

My only regret about the kitchen (besides not doing anything about those floors) is that I didn’t get roman shades for the window. Always room for improvement right?? 🙂

41 Small Kitchen Design Ideas And Tips That Will Be Huge In 2024

Welcome to Velinda’s kitchen. He lives in a house, or as he affectionately refers to it, “a small 400 square foot hobbit house that sits in a 980 foot bungalow above” that he rents. There are many ideas that bind themselves. First, let’s talk about electronics. This mini oven you see is actually a 5-in-1 oven! According to him it “bakes, grills, broils, cooks and microwaves … and can fit into a 24” cabinet. I’m sorry to report that I don’t think there is one but you get the idea, when it comes to electronics and small spaces, here’s what you can put together.

Smartly and from the box what he did was to take the correct dive and turn to the side. I’ll let him tell you why:

“I don’t like standard, small food baskets. I wanted something that would fit in a stock pot or dutch oven but make a great table centerpiece. I turned the normal drain on it’s side…meaning the drain was not checked. Uncouth, I know, but this uses every inch of the narrow 20″ wide (but 24″ deep!!) cabinet construction. AND, increase the storage space on the floor by placing the trash can (which is one of my needs) on one side instead of in the middle, freeing up half of the cabinet!”

Smart, can you!!!!? Also, notice how he chose a faucet with a wall so he doesn’t need a balance when he turns to face the sink. It all makes sense… because it is.

Velinda also mentioned that she chose those Zellige tiles to help reflect the light. It’s a great way to maximize space. Like a mirror but without looking at yourself! Basically, think twice before using matte tile in a small kitchen for this reason.

Have you noticed these gorgeous leather shelves?? Since it makes a great design statement with tile walls and hood, choosing those small metal cabinets is the best option so that it does not occupy the space but not to compromise the required storage. And they are very good!

Velinda’s last little kitchen break (but really read her entire post) were the metal cabinets she used as food storage. One is a towel bar on the side of the heavy-duty fireplace, and the other on the side of the cabinet is a tie bar. It fit well, had lots of hooks, and helped free up some drawer space. A must when cooking is right 🙂

Open Kitchen Ideas

Yes, I’m talking about those DIY vinyl tiles. How beautiful are they? And they all cost LESS THAN $50! This is not the only idea worth stealing
