Small Traditional Living Room Decorating Ideas – We love the new house and are slowly making it our home, one room at a time. If you haven’t been following along, we bought a Cape Cod house earlier this year and have been in the process of updating it. So far I’ve shared the boys room, dining room, family room, and today I’m sharing the formal living room.

One of the things I was most drawn to about our new home was the traditional floor plan. While I appreciate the open concept, I was drawn to the idea of separate spaces, especially now that we have smaller spaces. It’s nice to have space for family time and play while also having a quiet place to work or a more elegant space for entertaining. The formal living room is my “sweet room” where I don’t have to worry about storing toys or keeping the kids safe (mostly). I kept it very traditional, but brought a lot of personality with fun colors and patterns.

My favorite piece and the inspiration behind this space is the antique sofa. It is covered in beautiful Chinese silk upholstery with shades of green and soft pink, creating a beautiful focal point for the space. She complemented it with gold leaf accents like the Uttermost coffee table with a mirrored top for an elegant feel. Uttermost is one of my go-to sources for home decor and I am always impressed with their quality and affordability. Many thanks to them for making this table available for today’s tour!

I chose a neutral woven sisal rug with a Safavid geometric pattern. The details balance perfectly with the space, while not being too busy compared to a sofa. My friends at Safavieh were gracious enough to send me the rug to include in the design.

I am a big fan of sunburst mirrors. They are so timeless and instantly bring magic to a space. This gorgeous Eicholtz mirror is no longer available, but I’ve rounded up some similar options for you to browse below!

The walls, ceiling and trim were painted in alabaster by Sherwin Williams. I wanted to keep the paint neutral so that the color in the curtains and upholstery would be central. The white walls really opened up the space and gave it the light and bright feel I was looking for.

Wall sconces are an easy option if there is no overhead lighting. These brass sconces from Visual Comfort are timeless and perfectly balanced next to a sunburst mirror.

A variety of patterns keeps the space fun. The buffalo check pleated table skirt is from Ballards and the pink geometric pillows were a steal at Overstock. I liked stepping out of my usual comfort zone and mixing different prints.

These silk dupioni curtains from Ballards are everything. I can’t get enough of it! The soft green color fits beautifully next to the sofa and creates a soft contrast with the blush pink.

The flower arrangement on the coffee table consisted of English roses and a copper jug that I found on Facebook Market. I’ve rounded up a few of my favorite design books by Susan Kasler and Alexa Hampton. No coffee table is complete without a nice smelling candle.

How To Design A Pass-through Room

I wanted to make this room personal with family photos and silhouettes of my sons. The rose-painted bowl was passed down by my grandmother and has always been a statement piece, so I was excited to see it.

Now that you’ve seen the completed space, let’s take a look at what it looked like before I got my hands on it…
