Spare Bedroom Office Design Ideas

Spare Bedroom Office Design Ideas – When we moved from our tiny 1 bedroom apartment to our 2 bedroom apartment last year, I was very excited at the prospect of having more space for Eddie and I. I wanted a guest room, but also needed space for us to work on our laptops. Solution? Combo guest room/home office! When living in a small space, rooms have to work overtime. Even though the room is very small, I know we can make it work – it just means we have to be creative in using our space!

At our old place, Eddie and I had two separate tables in different rooms of the house. However, I knew they wouldn’t fit and make sense next to each other in our new home. We decided to go with a table for two instead! Each takes up less space than two pieces, and as an added bonus, looks super soft and cohesive. We were lucky that the two Ikea tables we had our eyes on matched this wall

My goal is to make the guest room light, comfortable and airy so that friends and family who are with us feel at home. Sheer curtains, an oversized wall hanging, comfy pillows and a sweet lil side table do the trick. My parents live in New York and I want to have a bed big enough for both of them when they visit – but I know that nothing bigger than a twin size frame will fit in this corner. That’s where this soft camp bed comes in! It’s actually two beds in one – we leave them stacked, but whenever we have more guests with us, we slide the top frame down and voila – two twin beds! Both mattresses fit in it when stacked, so we don’t have to worry about taking it out of storage. If we only have one guest, the bunk beds can be safely laid on because the top bed has small plastic feet that fit into the holes on the bottom bed. It really is a genius hacking site!

Advantages of a combined guest bedroom/home office? The bed also serves as a perfect space for a light break from work. Eddie and I use it completely as a day bed, either to read a book, pet the cat, enjoy a cup of tea and a snack, or when I want to get cozy on my laptop.

I wanted to use the wall space we have in this room, so we attached the Ikea Ekby Hemnes brackets and shelf to Eddie’s desk (like here). I just love the shelf sitch styling! Books, plants and framed photos are some of my favorite things to decorate a shelf with.

Above my side of the table I placed two prints that I typed from the Black & Blooms printer – Wonderland and Summertime. I shot both photos at Venice Beach, they are my favorite pairs in the store! I want our home office to be relaxing and inspiring, a stress-free but functional place where Eddie and I can be creative and really enjoy our work. These publications help with that! They make me laugh and are a reminder of how grateful I am to have my own small business made possible by readers and shop customers like you.

In this corner I hung a ceramic wall that I made in Gopi Shah x P.F. Workshop Candle Co, a fan given to me by my dear friend Whitney Leigh Morris, a wall charm I bought as a souvenir from Portland, and a lil print by The Grits with one of my favorite quotes/songs. I actually named one of my prints after that song! You can listen to Keep It Sunny in the store playlist. I made a cute rubber tree and terrarium at one of The Sill workshops for a green touch on the table.

I need as much storage as possible, but I also want it to be pretty. This little birch storage box is cute and will keep all the unsightly office stuff organized and in sight. I like to play with height, so having another flat surface on top of the chest just ties the whole table together.

It took us a while to finally tackle the website decor, but I’m so thankful we did. You’ve made a big difference – I want to spend time here now while it’s pretty run down and seems to be dirty all the time. Now it’s a place where we like to work and relax, and I like to think that our guests are happy here too 🙂 If you don’t have the space at home, consider creating a multi-purpose space with a combination home office / guest room to host overnight guests. This space can serve as a spare room for occasional guests or to store unused luggage. With some customization, this space can be transformed into a highly functional and attractive bedroom.
