The highest number of entries ever received for a stamp design competition was 239,374, achieved in the Royal Mail Stamp Design Competition held in 2013.
Eight designs will be selected as part of a special stamp set to be released next year. The design will mark the sixth time in Royal Mail’s 500-year history that designs created by children have been used on stamps (previously 1966; 1981; 1992; 2013; and 2017).

To arrive at the 120 regional finalists, a network of judges comprised of current and retired art teachers evaluated each of the 606,049 entries. Over three months, the best entries from Wales, Scotland, Northern Ireland and England are selected from each age group.

Among the 120 regions that made it to the finals, a special panel of judges will decide the 24 regional projects that will win in November.
From these 24 entries, eight winning images will be selected as official Royal Mail stamps. They will then appear on millions of UK postal items when they are launched in spring 2022.

Dorothy’s whale design was described by the judges as stunning, with good use of color and showcasing the wildlife of the British Antarctic Territory.
“I chose to draw a humpback whale because I love whales and I saw one in my book The Snail and the Whale. I know they live in Antarctica.
For anyone unfamiliar with The Snail and the Whale, it is a popular children’s book written by Julia Donaldson and illustrated by Axel Scheffler. (We are also fans of the book!). Whale populations are also recovering in the Antarctic region after large numbers were previously hunted.

The judges thought that Jessica’s design was attractive, covering different topics such as wildlife and science, and that some of the expressions were amazing.
“I like to learn about animals from all over the world, and I wanted to show many of the animals of Antarctica that I heard about at school.”
Jessica is right to point out the different types of wildlife that live in Antarctica. From seals, whales and sea life to fish, penguins and a variety of other birds. In her design, Jessica also captures a visiting scientist who seems happy to be around them.
The judges described Oliver’s design as artistic, with incredible details, including ice in the shape of the Antarctic continent.

“Many things inspired me to draw and paint this picture. First, during my vacation I completed my PADI diving certification, which is why I included a diver and some unique underwater Antarctic animals. Second, ice is abundant in Antarctica, but I thought that since this is a seal, it would be better for people to see the continent as an ice cap. Finally, Antarctica is home to many species of seabirds .I didn’t want to add any penguins as I knew they would be a common sight on other contestants’ stamps, but I did add a type of penguin that my parents saw on their trip to Antarctica. They even brought some back one of those Antarctic stamps from many years ago that I was so excited to see!”
We are very happy to see that Oliver has inspired many things. Ice, like its design, shows that it comes in amazing and amazing shapes as well as different sizes. “My mother’s experience of visiting Rothera, the British Antarctic Research Station, helped me to appreciate the uniqueness and beauty of this continent, which I wanted to depict in the design. During the expedition of Discovery, Scott, Wilson and Shackleton were important members. and displayed important characteristics such as endurance and capability, which is why I wanted to depict their journey. In the stamp, I depicted the ship Discovery and the attached hydrogen balloon that carried Scott into the air during the journey. “
