Summer Design Ideas Drawing – Hi, I’m Andrea Angleterre, Artist Ambassador for World Watercolor Month, back with a fun watercolor project for kids! I am currently an artist and sailor, but my other life is as an elementary school teacher and art coordinator. I taught watercolors for grades 3-8. graders and wanted to share some of my favorite activities you can try with the budding artists in your life (of all ages)!
Here I used the wet-on-wet technique to make the card. Since summer is on its way, I chose a heart of warm colors. You may have noticed that I used colors close to each other on the color wheel – yellow, orange and red. This was done to make my colors brighter when mixed with the paper – if I used yellows and purples next to each other I would end up with a muddy brown!

How To Draw Summer Archives
To make a card, start by folding a piece of paper. Lightly draw your heart with a pencil. Of course, you don’t have to paint a heart! Feel free to get creative, but keep your look simple and choose something with a recognizable silhouette.
Pour clean water on a large brush and paint to your heart’s content. You don’t want the paper to dry out, but you do want it to be a little shiny.
Then mix the first color. I did a thick yellow mix, because the value gets a little lighter when done on paper. If you use a lot of water in the mixture, you will get a pastel shade when it dries.
When you paint the first color of the heart, you will notice that it is a little out of control. The more water you use, the more it will come out. That’s part of the fun – but if you think the paper has gone too far, let the paper dry more and use a thicker color mixture for the next color.

I chose orange as the second color. You see orange and yellow together.
Change the amount of water in the heart or mixed. Wet paper and wet mixes work better together. Dry paper and thicker colors shrink. Try tilting the paper slightly when adding new colors so that the colors blend better.
Cut out the shapes and attach them to make them a summer curl (you can even paint the back once the front is completely dry). Or glue the shapes you cut out to a larger piece of paper to make a collage.
The value means how light or dark the color is. We are often taught that black makes a color darker and white makes it lighter. However, this does not work well when mixing watercolors. Black can make the color muddy and white makes the color thick and chalky, so we change the amount of water to change the value! This activity will help you learn how to use water in watercolor painting.

Use a cup or mug to draw circles on the watercolor paper. The circle is the basis of the painting. You can make a few circles so you can paint another picture while waiting for one to dry. While doing this work, I made three paintings.
Mix the green wash with plenty of water – it should be thin, like colored water. Place a piece of white paper on top of the circle to make it the sky, then paint a series of sharp mountain peaks (you can draw a small pencil drawing first if you like). Start painting at the top of the circle and fill in the space at the bottom of the circle so that everything except the sky is pale green.
Allow to dry (you can use a hair dryer to help – be careful not to blow the paint around – or why not work on another image while you wait?). How to check if it is dry? Hold it in front of the light – if it shines, it will take longer!
Use the same green to mix a darker shade – this time using less water. The color should be thicker than the first wash, like tea or cola. This will make it darker when it goes on paper. Take another layer of vertices below the first one and continue painting until you reach the end of the circle. Allow to dry.

Your last wash is the deepest shade. Just use a little water this time. The color is thicker, like juice or colored milk, and it is difficult to see. Color the bottom row of the mountain down to the end of your circle.
Clean the brush well and paint a red or orange sun in the sky. Or use your imagination and try a bird or a hot air balloon!
Try to create more worlds by using different colors. How does the mountain change when you turn it purple or blue?
Paint another world using values - maybe a city of skyscrapers? The sea? A desert of sand dunes? Remember, light layers always look long!

Summer and watercolor: what an artistic combination! Watercolor painting, pencil and color, or pure color is a good choice for summer painting, summer flowers, summer landscape, and enjoying the outdoors and beauty. The easiest way to paint with water is with a pencil and water wash.
This allows us to create great works of art and not worry too much about pencil lines and the perfect application of watercolor.

I’ve said it once and I’ll say it again: the pen and water wash is a great technique for beginning watercolor painters. Some people love it so much that they stick with the technique and make it their own.
If you are afraid to draw in pencil, make your first drawing in pencil. After that, you can draw with a pencil and erase everything else. Therefore, we have a beautiful and clean picture with black ink, and the watercolor paper is not damaged.
The most exciting part is adding water washes, as well as more detailed areas with full color. In this way, we can create beautiful paintings in a short time, because we do not need to transfer the image to watercolor paper in several steps, and it is easier to know where to use the color, because the black line shows it clearly. .
Summer is the perfect time to practice painting plants, flowers, vegetables, fruits and all kinds of plants and gardens. I find that placing a fence or the corner of a house adds an extra effect. A white or gray fence looks good with flowers and leaves.
Design And Technology
There are no hard and fast rules about background and additional details. Usually less. We should simplify our shows and concepts whenever possible. It depends on our style, intention and ability to add detail or leave it. A minimalist painting looks just as good as a detailed painting; there is no such thing as having to add detail to a painting. Many beginning artists wonder: what should they do with the background: leave it as it is, white, make it dark, or add shapes and colors to the background? It also depends on how you approach the subject.
My personal take is this: let the painting or drawing tell you what to do. This usually happens when you look at it closely and from a distance. In fact, you should always look at your creations from a distance, because if you are too close, you will miss the flaws and odd places that need improvement. Be sure to step back and look. If everything is flat and there is no contrast, add a little more.
I see that beginner artists are afraid of dark colors. Although painting with acrylics, where there is no risk of painting something too dark, because you can always paint the first layer and make them lighter, new artists do not use dark colors. Dark colors and lack of contrast reduce our freedom
