But first, let’s start with why we should care about setting the table. “You’re creating a 24-inch little world of beauty, wonder and delight for each guest,” says Gardner. “Creating a table is a great gift for friends old and new. It sets the tone for the next three hours.”
Before we get into the full formal setting of the table, let’s start with the most basic rule of the table: “OUT!”, as Gardner puts it in two words. Start with the dishes you plan to use first and place them at the far end of the place setting.
Salad forks go to the left of dinner forks, soup spoons go to the right of knives (blades point toward the plate!) on the right. As the Emily Post Institute tells you, you only need the dishes and utensils you plan to use, nothing else. “These rules make sense and are convenient for guests,” says Gardner. “They don’t mean to scare.”
Keep it simple for casual dinners at home and weeknight dinners with the family. You can put a napkin on the left side of the plate and put all the dishes in this order from left to right: fork, knife, spoon.

Alternatively, you can place the napkin on the left side, with the fork just above or to the left, then the knife and spoon on the right side of the plate in that order. A cup of water passes over the blade or at a 45 degree angle to its right. Plastics often reinforce random place settings and help with cleaning.
The same basic setup applies, but to take things up a notch, all you have to do is add the extra portions you need to your meal. Place the salad fork to the left of the dinner fork and the wine glass to the outside of the water glass. If you are serving dessert, place dessert forks and/or spoons on top of the plate or you can bring them to the table as you serve the final portion of the meal.
A bread plate, if used, goes on a fork, on which is a butter knife. Place the salad plate on top of the dinner plate and the soup bowl if you are using it. Under-plate chargers are optional, like the plates, but add a more formal feel. For a more formal four- or five-course meal, you might add a fish fork to the outer left and a fish knife to the outer right, as well as an oyster fork to the right.
Once you’ve decided on an order, it’s time for the fun part – using the china and glassware. “I don’t think there are any rules that have no exceptions,” says Gardner. “Think about the comfort and convenience of your guests. Make sure your sheets are starched and try bringing in unique or heirloom plates and stained glassware to add personality.

You may want to consider the centerpiece of the table and how to decorate it with floral arrangements or candles, or add greenery or a runner to the centerpiece of the table. (Of course you want to make something special for Thanksgiving or Christmas.)
Don’t forget about overhead lights. “Directed light is more important than exaggerated flowers,” says Gardner. “Dim the overhead lights and use small, tall sconces that gather light that compliments multiple levels. Everyone looks beautiful in mood lighting and everyone enjoys looking beautiful.
What about place cards? They should, says Gardner, if you try to host this dinner party and set the table properly. They should be placed on the dinner plate and dessert forks and/or spoons, and if you’re adding salt and pepper shakers for each guest, place them on either side of the place card. “Your guests are the reason for the move,” he says. “Make sure they have the neighbors entertained.”
And last but not least, “No matter how fancy the table is, I always make sure there’s something silly or quirky about the grandeur,” says Gardner. “How could a party with plastic toy insects land on fat peonies or irrelevant ballroom games? Give them something to talk about!” This way you can organize an unforgettable dinner.

Follow the rules, don’t bend or break! I’ve put together some basic ideas to get you started on your fall decorating. Just for inspiration!
Gather Together: How To Decorate A Dining Room
Fresh flowers and greenery in glass or ceramic vases are always a great, classic choice. Because I love neutrals, eucalyptus and white roses with ball stems are fall favorites. No duplicate branches? Place a base for a wreath or greenery on the table. Next, add a lamp with candles or pumpkins. Placed in a glass demijohn, the colorful foliage is an easy centerpiece for a kitchen island or dining table.
I use trays, pedestals, lamps and chests for dining room centerpieces. In the fall, favorites include using seasonal leaves such as magnolia leaves, wheat or pine wreaths, and fruits such as pumpkins or squash. Yes, pumpkin is a fruit. Speaking of pumpkins, fill a box with a variety of pumpkins or scatter some in the center of the table. Finally, a tray filled with wheat, candles, wooden beads and pumpkins often makes an easy centerpiece to work on a coffee table.
