If you don’t know how much content will fit into the timeline, you can choose the wrong layout design and you’ll end up doing a ton of extra work.

Since a timeline is supposed to be a visual summary of events, try to keep the descriptions very short. I usually like to aim for less than 30 words per description and then try to make it visually interesting with some visual elements like icons or illustrations.

I recommend a centered or left-justified vertical layout on most timeline infographics. It’s the easiest thing to create, edit and organize all kinds of content.

All timelines should be created around the same basic framework: a single line with branches or nodes at regular intervals. This may seem obvious, but it is absolutely critical.
