Today we’re excited to share tips for creating a cozy transitional living room. We get asked all the time about modern transitional style. It is attractive, timeless and full of interest. Styling your living room can seem like a daunting task, but we’ve got a few simple design rules that make it a lot easier than it seems… your cozy space will look professional in no time.

As you begin to decorate your living room, consider some of our top tips, like mixing modern and vintage pieces in your space and using objects with character and texture (like wooden benches and found objects). We also prefer to stick to neutral color tones, adding neutrals with throw pillows and throws to keep the room warm, full of texture and space.

Below, we’ve rounded up some of our favorite decor pieces that we love to have on hand when decorating a cozy transitional space. Here are some of our favorite pieces to create a modern classic look: books, vases and mugs, artwork, baskets, clean furniture, a neutral rug, wood-tone coffee tables and sideboards, and decorative pieces. When choosing these pieces, it’s important to measure your space to make sure you choose pieces that work well with your room. Keep dimensions in mind to help you choose items to scale as well. Think about the elements that already exist in your space and whether they fit the style you’re trying to create. If they are, save them and work on them. If not, consider selling and replacing these items to maintain the integrity of the space with your new transition theme after you finish designing it.

Transitional interior design style is the ultimate fusion of modern and past favorites, a golden foundation between classic and modern. If you like the idea, here are ten must-haves for the perfect transitional interior.

What Is Transitional Interior Design?

Before we explore the magic of transitional design, let’s find out what it actually is. This style combines the charm of traditional interiors with a clean, modern aesthetic, offering a wide platform for mixing and matching. It first gained popularity in the 1950s as a fresh alternative to the harsher mid-century modernist styles.

What distinguishes transitional interior design is its dynamic nature, constantly adapting to evolving trends. This design philosophy never feels dated, bridging the gap between past and present.

The colors of the house in the transitional style repeat the colors of the traditional style: gray, sand and white. This is mainly due to the fact that neutral palettes add to the traditional stately side of transitional interiors. However, dark and bold hues such as navy, charcoal and black are in vogue in a more masculine transitional decorating style.

Pro tip: Choose two neutral base colors, then add an unexpected accent such as deep olive or deep rust to small items like door trim or cabinetry to create subtle intrigue.

Don’t be intimidated by traditional neutrals, because you can definitely have fun with colorful accessories. Add sparkle, for example, with bright curtains, scatters and decorative elements. In the transitional bedroom, choose bed linen in bright colors. Also, if you have some wiggle room in your budget, you can reupholster your favorite furniture with something brighter.

Another beautiful transitional decor style that is a must-have is two-tone pillows. In true maximalist style, many pillows fit perfectly into the transitional design of the living room. Similarly, decorative pillows with a modern print or pattern can make the interior of a temporary home brighter.

Pro tip: Go for odd groupings of pillows (three or five on a sofa) to create a more dynamic living experience. Pair larger sizes with smaller, structured pillows for contrast.

Transitional Design Style 101

Like the transitional style of home decor, transitional furniture is also a mixture of two different design styles. Therefore, the large furniture of the traditional era is changing to become more streamlined and elegant to match the elegant status of the new trend. The biggest difference between traditional and transitional is that transitional interior design refers to interiors that have both modern and traditional features.

Pro tip: Mix eras by placing a sleek modern table next to a refined vintage chair. The main thing is that one part stands out, and the other complements, not competing.

Light your way to a new interior with contemporary lighting. One of the exciting ways homes move from the traditional realm to a transitional decorating style is through lighting. Because lighting can have such a fantastic effect on a room, fixtures are becoming increasingly prominent as designers push the boundaries. Then add an inspiring modern chandelier or molecular lighting for a fantastic accent.

Metal elements are desirable in modern homes, as they go perfectly with all styles of home decor. Incorporate gold, bronze or copper, for example, through side tables, lighting and accessories. Choose a metallic finish or mix metals for a modern contemporary look.
