Tv Mount Over Fireplace Ideas – If you have a house (or are building one), the best place for a TV is on the fireplace.
I knew the TV fireplace issue had to be fixed in order to truly love my family room.
Tv Mount Over Fireplace Ideas
Having a big black box on a beautiful and decorated fireplace was not what I wanted, but I chose the TV over the fireplace design because I knew I would find a way to make it look great.
What’s The Correct Tv Height Above Your Fireplace?
I thought of having a cabinet / bookcase on one side of the fireplace to hold the TV and components, but that throws off the symmetry and balance.
The plan was to print a photo on a remote control shade that moves down and up to cover and reveal the hidden TV.
There are affiliate links in this post, however, I paid for these because they are exactly what I was looking for. Furthermore, the opinions expressed are my own. It is very important for me to give you real and honest reviews and not to deceive my friends.

Above: Here’s a picture showing our framework for this idea that never happened.
I still think the above would be a good solution, but in the end we decided that the Samsung TV frame and the Deco TV frame would be a better solution.
Samsung Frame TV has an art mode that works similar to the screen saver on your computer. When you turn off the TV, it automatically goes to “sleep” mode with art mode display. You can set a time for how long this display will be shown before the TV screen goes black. It’s also motion activated, so when the TV is off and someone walks into the room, the Art Mode screen turns on automatically.
With the Samsung Frame TV in Art mode, the picture is not as bright as when you are watching TV, making it look more like a real framed piece of art. You can adjust the carpet, filters, color and brightness as well as the displayed image. You can even use your photos for artwork. I purchased this digital artwork designed specifically for this purpose from ETSY. There are many beautiful options to choose from. Here are some other options I like:
Can I Put A Tv Above A Fireplace?
For this to really work, it needs to look like a framed piece of art. It should hug the wall, have no visible wires, and have a slim and sleek profile that’s thinner than most TVs out there. The Samsung TV frame mounting bracket allows it to sit perfectly flat on the wall. This is the key. Also, a check box is provided to add additional components in an out-of-sight area. A wire comes out of the TV that you run from the wall to the box and all the other components connect to it. The box itself does not require remote viewing to control, meaning it can be hidden.
See how to do it in the fireplace mantel. There’s nothing fancy inside, but we’re the only ones who ever see it (unless my husband is doing a “boy tour” of our house.)
The box that comes with the FrameTV is in our fireplace. We just built a shelf and had an outlet (during construction). You can put a small cabinet for a cleaner look. Be sure to check your fireplace specifications to make sure it complies with flammable materials.
The frame was very thin and the framing didn’t really help “sell” the Framed-Art-not-TV look I was going for.
13 Tv Wall Designs That Make Your Screen Look Cool
I was able to assemble and install the Deco TV Frame by myself in less than 5 minutes, no tools required.
All this costs less than if we had built a cabinet built to hold the TV and its components next to the fireplace.
And you can save $50 on a Deco TV frame and/or a Samsung TV frame here with my coupon code: OLDBARN
I love this room now and enjoy the space even more now that there isn’t a giant black box draining the life out of it!
Can You Put An Electric Fireplace Under A Tv? [and Minimum Distance]
I’d love to hear your thoughts on the hidden TV on the fireplace. Do you go for it with this solution?

Hello! I’m Jessica, wife of Cody, and mother of 2 boys and a girl, who are very lucky because every day with me is like an episode of Carpool Karaoke! ride and show! (What I lack in talent, I make up for with power and enthusiasm). I have a background in architecture and designed this house we just built in a small town in Texas. We have outsourced the construction ourselves…and are still completing a few projects. Oh! And our floor plans are available on this website. You can find me on Instagram @the.old.barnso most days, come tell me! When I shared my plans on Instagram, I was really surprised by how many people told me not to! While I agree that mounting the TV on the fireplace is not always ideal, it is the most practical place in some homes.
Our house is a great example. Our living room is open to the entrance on one side, the dining room on the other, and a wall of glass sliders on the third side. The only TV wall is our fireplace wall, which we can install over the fireplace or sit on one of the bookshelves next to it. When we entered, that wall was like this:
Incorporating Cabinets/tvs Into Your Living Space
We initially tried to put the TV on the bookshelf on the right, but the viewing angle was absolutely terrible. It was then that the project of installing the TV above the fireplace (including the change to a lower height than the fireplace) was born! Today I’m sharing the details of our fireplace makeover and everything you need to know if you decide to mount a TV on your fireplace too!
The less you can mount the TV on the stove, the better. A good target height is to keep the center of your TV below 70 inches. If it is much higher than that, you can strain your neck a little to watch TV.
What if the mantel is high enough to center your TV over 70 inches? You may want to find a different place for your TV or, if possible, remodel your fireplace surround to reduce the height of the fireplace. Our booth height was originally 68 inches, which means the center of our TV was close to 90 inches tall. After having to put in a new fireplace and redo the fireplace, our new cabinet is 47″ long and the center of our TV is about 69″. We relax with our legs propped up on a sectional or coffee table while watching TV, and we find that this height is very comfortable to watch TV without any strain on the neck!
Here you can see the big changes in mantle height from the old mantle to our new model:
Why It’s A Mistake To Mount A Tv Above A Fireplace
If you are happy with your fireplace insert and stone/tile surround, all you have to do is replace the fireplace itself, which is a very simple project for a carpenter. We did a complete remodel because we wanted a new gas insert that was cleaner and didn’t require a stove (we extended the hardwood for the fireplace as part of the hardwood floor refinishing project). And I was dying to get rid of the brown marble around. We went and replaced the brown marble with white Tasos marble (left over from a local stone manufacturer).
Having a TV above the fireplace looks best when your TV is the right size for your fireplace. A television that is between ⅔ and ⅞ the width of your mantel is best. If the TV has a frame like the one we bought, consider the size of the frame if you want to choose a large frame (with the width of the TV + frame less than ⅞ the width of the mantel). Remember that TV sizes are based on their diagonal measurements, so a 55 inch TV is several inches shorter than 55 inches when measured across.
Our cabinet is 69 inches wide, which (using the ⅔ – ⅞ rule) means that a good TV will be between 46-60 inches wide. We were debating between the 55-inch (48.7-inch width by 27.9-inch height) and 65-inch (57.4-inch width by 32.8-inch height) sizes, both of which fall in that sweet spot. . You can guess which one I was broadcasting
