Watching the fish in the tank is interesting. But, for me if the aquarium has a place where the fish swim above you, that is very exciting. I love the feeling of being completely immersed (and dry). When my daughter wanted a birthday party under the sea, I saw an image of a fish silhouette above a party decoration. As soon as I saw it, I knew I needed to do something similar.

Unfortunately, the picture I found was for a long hall and no direction. It’s simple enough, but I have a few questions. So, I experimented and modified it a bit to work in my house. I hope these instructions make it easier for you to make your own cool underwater decorations for your party, VBS, or other ocean theme.

To make this party, I printed a bunch of fish silhouettes. I found fish, sharks, and free clip art from the Clipart Library. My printer has a problem and only a few prints in full black. The paper blocked enough light that it didn’t matter what color they were.

Then, I cut out each ocean animal and taped it to the plastic blue tablecloth using masking tape.

The last step is to hang it. The picture I found was hanging in the school hall or something. My house doesn’t have a real porch so I knew it wouldn’t work. I ended up hanging it above my stairs. This works especially well as I live in a two story apartment, making this THE first thing people see when they walk in. To hang it, I put tape on each corner of the table to reinforce it. Then, I used a safety pin to attach each corner.

I love that it’s the first thing people see when they walk in. I was worried it would block out too much light, but it didn’t and set the stage for an instant underwater party. This was the quickest, easiest and cheapest decoration I made for my daughter’s under the sea party. Since I first wrote this post, we have held a second Under the Sea themed VBS. I’ve included some of those new photos in the mix.

The sea background and water effect in the top photo is simply a plastic tablecloth cut into strips (leaving a few inches on top), each strip extending out every inch.

I used this fun technique in my DIY jellyfish kit where I show in more detail how it’s done.

Easy and quick, this ladder of moving colored paper fish works beautifully to cover large wall areas.

We have made templates of sea fish cuts to distribute to several women so that all fish will be the same. It’s a great way to decorate a large area with an underwater scene on the cheap.

Another large wall and the simple technique of hanging a plastic tablecloth is an easy way to make waves. Dollar Store fish is an excellent and inexpensive addition.

2. The Finding Nemo Water game is very popular with children. We filled the basin with water beads and lots of plastic sea animals. Kids have to get rid of certain types of sea creatures for special points. “Finding Nemo” is harder than it looks.

3. Photo booths are always popular, so we did it two ways. As well as the usual photo booths with pottery and the usual signs, we have an underwater area where you can lie down and take pictures and “boomerangs” from above.
