Because I hate conflict, I teach both methods—one where students draw a triangle in a quadrant and use what they know about 30-60-90 or 45-45-90 triangles to solve it, and another where they learn the first quadrant of the triangle. unit circle and then reflect on others’ quadrants to get the answer.
For years I have commissioned a unit circle project where students design a unit circle that they can wear or take with them throughout the day…the crazier the better. I’ll give bonus points to the first 3. Some of my favorites included the printer tattoos worn by the students, the Shrinky Dink jewelry, the Unit Circle Togas… and so much more…

But a day earlier this year, I came across Unit Circle Art, Miss Rudolph’s blog. I loved its directions and principles, used it in Precalculus and Algebra 2 classes, and have never been happier with the results. So this year the students were told not to use pre-made circuits…it was a game changer. I’ve gotten some really lame projects in the past where students have cut out and glued unit circles to circular shapes. I also said that they cannot use http://www.embeddedmath.com to create a pre-made circuit. So the students worked really hard (for the most part…and if they didn’t, their grades suffered.) The rules were: first don’t use a circle, but you can draw a circle. You must enter the degree, radian, sine, cosine, and tangent of each special angle. You cannot use a pre-drawn unit circuit. According to the aforementioned blog, which I posted here on Pinterest: unit circle project, and I used Miss Rudolph’s rubric exactly.
Since spring break, I have been lucky enough to have a new classroom where 3 walls are lined with white board paper. I was thinking about how I could do something else after teaching the unit circle where the students would go to the blackboard. While moving (usually works best – organically), I asked students to go to the board in pairs, each with a different marker. Here are the instructions:
The kids definitely talked about it… it was a million times better than when I filled out the unit circle with them before… they loved drawing on the board, helping each other, talking about it. Confused students had a partner to help them. If a couple got stuck, they could see what another couple was doing.
My students like to compete for geek of the week and they asked who could draw the unit circle the fastest… of course we had to use the Rocky theme… I got this idea from a blog but I don’t know if you can find it… if you know where did you get it from, please let me know so I can let the owner know!

Mu Alpha Theta States was so much fun…the poster contest was “Math and Movies.” Seven girls worked so hard to make this poster…some of them stayed up all night, in fact! We didn’t win, but they definitely won in my eyes! It’s a combination of Mean Girls and Good Will Hunting and The DaVinci Code.
Family members said it was the best dessert ever, so here is King Arthur’s Flourless Chocolate Cake recipe…very rich and decadent!
