Upper Deck Design Ideas – We are fortunate to have been given many opportunities to work with clients on a variety of projects over the years. One of the most common areas of interest is the living space of the home. The best way to maximize your yard is to add (or renovate) a patio and deck. A deck and patio combination is a great way to maximize your living space, not only horizontally, but also vertically. The upper level deck leading to the lower level terrace is sure to provide plenty of fantastic outdoor living space for you to take full advantage of and enjoy. Often homeowners tell us that they use these two zones for different purposes. While a deck can be a more intimate outdoor family gathering space, a patio can be a more entertaining space while people also enjoy the backyard. Of course, the best way to use your deck and patio will vary from person to person. Those who like to host large gatherings outdoors often utilize both spaces at the same time! There is no doubt that a patio and deck combination is the best way to maximize the enjoyment of your property. But you want to make sure it is designed and built correctly. That’s why we’ve put together some key tips to keep in mind if you’re considering patio and deck design. Patio and deck combination: where to start? If you’re starting with a clean slate and don’t yet have any hardscape or structures on your property (and you want a deck and patio), we encourage you to explore your options through professional landscape design. Rather than exploring the patio first and the deck second, look at the design, carefully considering both elements. It is important to first look at the bigger picture and then understand the relationship between each area. This process will also help you make the right decision when selecting your star items. If possible, it is best to start with the terrace. This is primarily because it is easiest to coordinate the project from the excavation site, starting with the terrace. The patio legs can be installed while digging the patio. Sometimes, homeowners don’t even work on the project until “phase two” if they expand the project over time. In terms of stages, in some cases it may be ideal to start with the patio, and for initial value-added projects, the first phase of deck construction may involve installing footers for subsequent decks so that no reassembly is required later. excavation and breaking of the terrace in the second stage, arrangement of the terrace. Examples like this really show the value and importance of a patio and deck design that serves as the “master plan” for the entire project. Some homeowners may choose to hire one company to build the patio and another company to build the deck. Unfortunately, scenarios like this tend to occur and end without coordination between companies. Not only does this mean that the final design doesn’t look aesthetically unified, but it can also cause functional problems. For example, there may be steps from the deck that lead directly to the middle of the terrace, making them unusable or even blocking the view of the surrounding landscape. If both spaces are designed simultaneously, the stairs can be deliberately moved to the side so they don’t interfere. Everything from traffic flow to views should be considered simultaneously when designing your patio and deck. Both spaces will be laid out in a coherent way and will even be carefully considered to maximize smooth pedestrian flow and frame key views. Patio and Deck Ideas with an Existing Deck Of course, many of these types of projects start when the homeowner already has a deck and wants to add a patio. Often, the project also includes rebuilding the deck, especially if it was originally built with pressure-treated wood that is starting to peel, peel, and generally show its age. For example, for this landscaping project, we rebuilt the homeowner’s two wooden decks using the WOLF brand, a wood alternative that requires no maintenance and does not rot (like wood). With all the great alternative materials available today to wood, as well as the beautiful aluminum fence options, many homeowners are interested in upgrading their deck as part of an outdoor living project. While this is a case-by-case scenario, we can often take the original deck frame and rebuild on top of it, essentially providing an upgrade with updated, more durable materials for all surfaces, railings and stairs. However, often homeowners simply want a larger deck or a new layout, which are certainly great options to explore with a landscape design professional. If a patio is being built directly below a deck, another important consideration is the addition of a roof (under the deck and above the deck) that collects and directs rainwater to an inconspicuous drainage system, ensuring the patio area remains a dry space. , rain or sun. Choosing a Deck and Patio Builder As you begin the process of considering options for your backyard living space, it’s important to realize that not all patio builders have the team and expertise to be able to build a deck. On the other hand, most patio builders will not be able to build a patio. But as we mentioned, it’s important to find a company that can design and build both to give you the complete look and full functionality you want. Our years of experience designing and building many deck and patio combinations at Earth, Turf, & Wood has given us the understanding and ability to ensure these two areas work together seamlessly. Every detail of the project is taken into account from the start so that you don’t have regrets later because the project wasn’t built a certain way. We believe that every detail is important in producing the best final product. Complex spaces with more than one surface finish will definitely benefit from this investment, given professional attention to design and getting the construction right – and not all contractors can offer this. However, if you want to ensure that your project is completed exactly as you want, it is important that you make wise choices about who completes the work. There is no room for error when investing your hard-earned money in something as important as a custom outdoor living space that, when designed properly, will serve as an oasis for creating lifelong memories.
