A wall painting shaded in your favorite colors creates a stopping moment wherever you paint it, even if it is relatively “minimal” and unobtrusive. We chose to paint our ombré over a fireplace to give it a pop of color, but you can use the same technique on any wall, or even furniture. We used “sunset” colors for ours, but you can change them to any color mood you like!

My house has undergone some renovations in recent months. I’m really excited about all the changes because they make my house feel so much bigger. One of the things I was most excited about was my gallery wall!
The original gallery wall looked like this. It was a bland wall of art and photos that didn’t have much meaning. Instead, with the help of my decorator, Rachael from Snow Studio, we created not only a new design for the pictures, but also a really fun wall DIY with The Home Depot.
My decorator originally suggested wallpaper for this wall. But I have NO idea how to upload wallpapers and thought it would be a difficult project to try on my own. Also, even if it’s a small wall, it still would have cost a pretty penny.
Diy Home Office Accent Wall: How To Color Block
Instead, I decided to emulate wallpaper and make a DIY brush stroke accent wall. It couldn’t have been easier and more fun to do. Here’s what I did and how you can create this statement wall in just a couple of hours and with the help of The Home Depot.
This project could not have been easier. You only need a handful of supplies available at The Home Depot. And it costs almost nothing. Which is even better, right?
Plus, it’s super quick and can be done in just a couple of hours. It was also a lot of fun. I had a great time doing it. Just put on some music or a podcast and get to work!
I went to The Home Depot and picked up some paint samples. I was torn between a few options and ideas. From going dark to match my BEHR MARQUEE® Starless Night in the living room, to choosing a more neutral choice like the BEHR Sedona Pick.

I also chose PPG Jamaican Dream which is a bit brighter and more electric. To find a happy medium, I was also given a sample of BEHR Dayflower to try and BEHR Hemisphere.
Taking a few samples is affordable and you will be sure to get the right color. Also, if you’re trying to match a specific color, I highly recommend using the ProjectColorâ„¢ app.
It’s a great app for your phone where you can upload or take a photo in the app and easily find the perfect color match. You can match anything, like a photo, fabric or wallpaper!
This one is completely up to you and your preferences. Each brush will give you a different look. I took a standard 1-inch sponge brush and a handful of flat, clip-on brushes in various sizes. I recommend buying a few so you can find one that fits your style and the feel you’re after.

Once you have these two things, go home and try your hand at paints and brushes. Use a basic white paper to practice and see what you like. I even hung a few on the wall to see which colors I liked best.
I tried a handful of colors and ended up really liking this medium blue called Hemisphere by BEHR. It was between Dayflower and the brightly saturated Jamaican dream of The Home Depot’s 2020 color trends.
I also really liked the 1 inch angled brush out of all the brushes I picked up. I thought the brush was a little too thick for what I had in mind so I cut about half of it off and made it less thick but still 1 inch long.
Now that you’ve figured out what color you want, head to Home Depot’s paint department and get some paint on. A small accent wall doesn’t require a ton of paint and I only used a paintbrush.

I used the BEHR MARQUEE® One-Coat Interior Paint formula to make it super easy. Just one layer is all you need. I chose to do it with an eggshell finish.
You can do a few things here. For me, I make a mess, so I taped my cutout with FrogTape Multi-Surface Painters Tape and also got a drop cloth. If the wall is not yet the color you want for the background, be sure to paint it a few days before doing the accent wall.
I just went with the classic white. Personally, I don’t think you need to stress over the white underneath as most of it will be covered by your brush strokes.
This is the fun part. As in, IT’S SO FUN! There really is no rhyme or reason here. Just start somewhere and keep going. I found it was easier to do the cutout areas on the wall in one step. It definitely took a bit more effort to keep things off the wall/trim.

However, the rest is really a free for all. Just iron in the same direction all around. Keep things somewhat similar.
My strokes got shorter up and down as I practiced. I varied the starting point of the lines so that they were not all horizontal in a straight line. But I’ve definitely seen tutorials where you can do it. I preferred the more organic look and it made it easier without having to worry about being in a straight line
