One of the most popular elements when building mom’s dream nursery is creating a stunning accent wall! There are many ways to do this, including using decorative wallpaper, wood stickers, picture frames and more. For my son’s nursery, I originally wanted to apply a cute patterned wallpaper behind the crib. However, that plan was quickly scrapped when I felt that the orange peel on my walls wouldn’t work for wallpaper. Instead, I decided to paint a custom geometric pattern directly on the wall to accentuate the room.
Wall Design With Tape And Paint
Unlike other methods, painting your walls is beneficial because (1) it’s cheaper than buying expensive wallpaper, (2) it’s easy to paint when it comes to removing a pattern, whereas wallpaper requires a serious process, and (3) you can choose the colors and patterns that best suit your style!
Wall Paint Design Ideas With Tape That Will Completley Transform A Room
The first step is to paint your accent wall according to your choice of color. If yours is already the color you want, you can move on to the next step!
Our main wall color for the room in this project was Behr Ultra White Metal in Eggshell. To tone down the accent wall a bit, we used Behr Ultra Silent White (despite the name, it’s still a gray color).
Use some masking tape to tape the areas around the wall to prevent some mistakes when painting the wall. We recommend using 1.88″ sensitive tape because it’s wider (making it easier to avoid mistakes) and won’t peel off existing paint. Then paint the wall with a foam roller.
Unless you’re just making up your design as you go, this will be the most tedious but important part of the entire project. If you have graphic design experience, the best way to create your design is to draw your wall in a program like Adobe Illustrator and scale the design to the correct size. This makes it much easier when you paint the design on the actual wall as you will have all the measurements and lengths ready to go. Before you start, you can make sure that all parts of the design are symmetrical, at right angles and parallel.
How To Use Frog Painter’s Tape To Create A Plaid Check Accent Wall
If you don’t have graphic design experience, you can draw your design to scale (1 inch = 1 foot) and use a protractor to find your angles.
In this design I kept things simple by using only 45 degree corners and 1.5 inch wide strips. When I painted it on my wall I used a spirit level to make sure all my lines were at right angles and a long ruler to trace the lines.
After drawing, you need to outline your design with Frog Tape, making sure to cover the tape with paint only outside the lines. Otherwise, you’ll have a lot of work to delete/clean up!
If your design has interlaced lines, the best way to draw it is in stages. This way you can easily apply frog tape in one line without worrying about bleeding and mistakes.

Be sure to press the tape down HARD around your lines, attaching the tape to the first part of your design. It is good to use your finger and press on the groove on the texture of the wall. If you don’t apply enough pressure and your tape has a lot of air bubbles or gaps, you will have a lot of bleeding under the tape.
When you’re ready to paint, make your first color very thin, this will help the masking tape adhere to the wall while minimizing bleeding. Depending on the color difference between the color of your wall and the color of the tape, 2-3 coats may be needed. As soon as you finish your last layer, remove the tape and let the paint dry completely before moving on to the next step.
Apply the next level of Frog Tape to the second set of lines to create interlocking lines. Carefully sand the edges of the lines with fine grit sandpaper to remove any hard edges that the frog tape creates where the lines intersect. This way, after you draw your second line, it will look like a smooth shape.
Once the sand is set and glued, follow the same strategy as in step 3 and draw the next set of lines.
How To Create A Stunning Wall Design With Just Masking Tape!
My design has lines cut in 3 different ways, so I had to complete the painting in three steps. Although it took a little longer and required a little more patience, doing it this way kept my lines nice and clean without the need for complicated gluing.
No matter how hard you try to avoid bleeding, if your walls are stuck, they will always happen. Unless you’re a colorist (I’m not), they’re somewhat unavoidable. Once all your paint is completely dry, use a foam brush and some base paint to clean up the edges of the bleeding lines. If you applied your frog tape correctly most of your lines should be very clear and this step doesn’t have to be as boring as it sounds! DIY crocheted wall tutorial! You can see my last tutorial where I made black and white stripes on the main wall of my bedroom. Everyone thought it was wallpaper, but it wasn’t – just paint, lots of blue tape and a weekend job.
Now, before we get into today’s lesson, a little background on how this project came about. I’m currently in the middle of the One Room Challenge and I’m exhausted.
Trying to figure out what kind of accent wall I want to create in my bedroom. No, seriously. I even saw about them. In the end I was able to narrow all my inspiration down to two favorite options.
Geometric Wall Decor Using Painters Tape
Both extremely beautiful walls use wood paneling to create a geometric pattern, but as a tenant this was not an option for me. Instead, Ira proposed a flat, semi-glossy black color to create a tone-on-tone striped look, mimicking the effect of wallpaper.
A wall hanging in my life, I did glitter stripes on flat paint for my Victoria’s Secret themed bedroom 10 years ago (it was trendy and I wanted to be an angel, right?) and one was a headache. Fixing the lines, making sure the tape doesn’t peel off the base color, using polyurethane to create a shine effect… it’s just a big DIY nightmare. The only thing that convinced me to change my mind was how great those lashes were.
So, I went with Ira’s idea to paint lashes and wow. I’m so glad I did. They look better than I thought, and they really do.

Geometric Wall Mural
I already explained my inspiration process to him, so I didn’t go into it too much, but I basically watched.
Different accent walls and geometric patterns to decide what I like best and what will look good in my room. In the end, I narrowed it down to two main inspiration photos and combined elements from each to create my own unique design.
I drew my unique design on grid paper to use as a guide for the drawing. This will help you stick to your plan rather than trying to create something on the spot.
If you’re more like me, you can even create a photoshop shot to see what the overall look will be, furniture and all.
Diy Home Office Accent Wall: How To Color Block
Before you begin, wipe any dirt and dust off the wall. Tape the edges of the wall and ceiling with multiple layers of tape to minimize unwanted color transfer.
Apply two coats on the entire wall using soft paint. I let my first coat dry overnight before painting the second color, but a few hours should be plenty of time between coats. After the second coat, I let the wall dry for 3 days before doing the next step. You must allow the wall to dry for at least 48 minutes before painting the strips, or you could ruin your new paint job with painter’s tape in the next step.
Adhere your template to the wall using duct tape. I used wooden cloths to keep it
