Wall Paint Design Ideas With Tape – If you’ve seen photos of the interior of our home, you know we love bold patterns and bright colors. In fact, only one room and the downstairs toilet use neutral colors.

Slowly, our DIY projects have become more and more adventurous over the years. By combining my excellent skills with Lee’s vision, we found that we made the perfect home decorating team.

When we first bought our house in 2018, we decided to try something different in the living room, big, bold turquoise diamonds – what’s the worst that could happen, right? If it looks rubbish, we paint over it.

In fact, it went surprisingly well (as you might have guessed), so each room became bolder and more ambitious.

The goal was to use up some of the old colors we had around (paint is so expensive!) What started as a simple idea (paint the walls a dark blue) eventually evolved into something more wonderful and beautiful.

The first thing we did was freshen up the walls with a coat of white paint. The wall had a bunch of old marks and discoloration and we didn’t want it to show, so we gave it two coats of white while we styled it.

I actually use Canva to help with this because it’s so much faster and easier than drawing by hand. We also modified the color scheme did we go for something random, or something more patterned?

Now that we know what we’re doing, it’s just a case of tape to the wall. This is always the hardest part because it has to be as accurate as possible, especially when dealing with geometric shapes.

I started by drawing horizontal lines to provide a frame. Unfortunately, building these walls often feels like a mathematical equation. We had to measure the height of the wall and then divide it by a certain number of rows (while allowing a band in between) to get the height.

Once we have the rows in place, we need to determine the height/width of the triangle. It’s a little math plus a little guesswork. Finally, I made a template of exact size paper to help me mark the walls (mainly so I could get the corners right).

Then it was just a matter of measuring, marking and taping each side of the triangle along each row (this took me hours!)

Geometric Wall Paint

When we decide to use a pattern, it is very important to draw the right triangle. It’s very easy if you only use two colors – you can draw all other shapes. But I have three colors to deal with here!

So I wrote the B on the blue triangles with a pencil and used some tape to mark the triangles that would remain white.

IMPORTANT: Before you start painting, be sure to wipe off each piece of tape to make sure it’s properly sealed to the wall, otherwise you’ll end up with small leaks.

It was a case of painting with every color. I started with blue, applied a few layers and then moved on to silver.

We found that the metallic paint left distinct strokes on the wall, which would look messy if they weren’t all pointing in the same direction. So the silver triangle took about three coats, carefully ensuring that all the strokes were neat, even and going in the same direction for aesthetic purposes.

I assume this is not the case with all metallic paints, so it may depend on the brand we buy.

Now you need to remove the tape while the paint is still wet. I know, it sounds counter-intuitive. However, if you wait for the wall to dry completely, you run a greater risk of ripping off large chunks of paint.

I usually leave it on for about half an hour to an hour and then remove the tape, which is hands down the most satisfying feeling on earth. Suddenly all these clean lines started to appear and they looked great!

Of course you will notice all the mistakes like where the paint bleeds because the tape didn’t seal completely either. But it can be solved.

There is always a bit of polish. After a day or so, when the wall is 100% dry, I go back with a small brush and touch up anything that needs it.

The hallway is definitely my favorite wall so far, although I love all the walls we’ve done for different reasons.

9 Wall Painting Ideas To Transform Any Room Into A Work Of Art

I have so many projects in my head that I don’t have enough time to create them.

Some of them have already been created like the gradient hexagon wall or the blue and gray herringbone wall or the diamond painting floor for the imagination room or any of these projects here.

I described this to my husband and his eyes lit up, his brain started working, a light bulb went off and he shook me around and said….

The first thing we do is determine the size of the cube and how we want the cube to look.

Geometric Wall Decor Using Painters Tape

I know I don’t want all sides of the cube to be exactly equal. To create the 3D look of the cube, I knew I wanted the top to be smaller – a bit like a diamond. That smaller piece at the top creates the illusion of the cube jumping off the wall.

We chose a starting point, then measured and repeatedly marked points 9 inches apart along the wall along a vertical line. Next we measured 15 inches more to the right and made the same mark on the wall. Next, we measure from one of these points to the ceiling, then move 7 ½ inches to the right and mark the wall exactly 4 ½ inches from the previous mark. We then continued the pattern over the entire wall. Finally, we “connected” the dots with pencil lines and then taped off the “top” of each cube.

You’ll want to use a level when measuring to make sure your lines don’t start to “wander”.

I wanted to create the impression that the light was coming in from the right, so we planned the colors on the cube.

(To recap: This is Sherwin-Williams’ color of the year. You can see another project I did with it here.)

Once the second layer was dry, we removed the tape and planned the next layer of the DIY cube wall.

Before painting, it is important to tape the outside of the cube’s edges to ensure that the entire side of the cube is painted. If you don’t put the tape on the outside of the cube edges, they won’t line up correctly.

One of the most popular elements of building a mom’s dream nursery is creating a beautiful wall! There are many ways to do this, including using decorative wallpaper, wood grain, picture frames and more. For my son’s nursery, I originally wanted to put a cute patterned wallpaper behind the crib. However, this plan was quickly scrapped when it occurred to me that the bubbly orange peel texture of my walls was not suitable for wallpaper application. I decided to paint a custom geometric pattern directly on the wall to accent the room.
