Writing Contests For Elementary Students – You’re invited to enter the annual Smoky Hills PBS KIDS Writer’s Contest! Get ready to spark your imagination, develop your creative voice, and share your stories with viewers across central and western Kansas.
The PBS KIDS Writer Contest is a competition designed to promote the advancement of children’s reading skills through hands-on, active learning. This effort encourages children in grades 1-5 living in central and western Kansas to celebrate the power of creating stories and creating their own illustrations!
Writing Contests For Elementary Students
When can I submit my child’s story? We accept stories all year round. The deadline for articles is usually the end of February. Your registration must be postmarked before February 24. Where should I send my application? Smoky Hills PBS PO BOX 9 Bunker Hill, KS 67626 Can the stories be dictated to an adult? Yes. Children who cannot write can tell their story to an adult who will write it down. Does spelling matter? No. Judges do not take spelling into account, “best spelling” is acceptable.

Can clip art, coloring book characters, or stickers be added to the illustrations? Can someone else do my illustrations? No. Your illustrations must be your own work. Should I link my story? No. We will accept your story whether it is bound, stapled or simply cut from paper. Will I get my original story back?
If you would like your original story returned to you, include an envelope and postage when sending your story. Once the trial is complete, we will send your original copy in the envelope you provided.
Judged on originality, creative expression, story, illustrations and overall impression. Some things that make a story special include colorful art; a unique story; a story with a good beginning, a good middle, and a good ending; illustrations corresponding to the story; attention to detail; and following the competition rules.
How will I know if my story won? Smoky Hills PBS will announce the winners through a 30-minute production during which we will read the winners’ stories. The names of the finalists and winners will be published on our site the same day the production is broadcast. The writers’ competition winners’ show airs in May. More details on this will be announced in April. The 2025 PBS KIDS Writer’s Contest will take place in January! Central Missouri children in grades K-4 are invited to write and illustrate their stories and submit them to PBS! This competition is designed to promote the advancement of children’s reading skills through hands-on, active learning.
